Yes, Monzo is generally considered safe for UK banking from a regulatory and deposit-protection perspective. Monzo Bank Limited is a fully authorised UK bank, not simply an e-money app.
It is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and PRA, and has Financial Services Register number 730427. The Bank of England’s September 2026 list of PRA-regulated UK banks continues to include Monzo Bank Limited.
Eligible money held as deposits with Monzo is also protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) up to £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm if the bank fails. The limit increased from £85,000 to £120,000 on 1 December 2025, so older articles still quoting £85,000 for ordinary Monzo cash deposits are now out of date.
However, saying “Monzo is safe because it has FSCS protection” is only part of the answer.
FSCS protection does not prevent somebody being scammed, protect an investment from falling in value, guarantee uninterrupted access to the app or mean every disputed transaction will automatically be refunded.
This guide therefore looks separately at the different risks someone should consider before using Monzo as a main bank account.
Is Monzo a Real Bank?

Yes. Monzo Bank Limited has full UK banking permissions. The PRA authorises it to accept deposits, while the FCA and PRA supervise different aspects of its activities and prudential position.
That distinction matters because not every financial app operating in the UK has historically been a bank.
An electronic-money institution may have to safeguard customer funds without those balances necessarily being covered by the FSCS deposit guarantee in the same way as money held with a UK-authorised bank.
Monzo is different: it is a UK bank.
Readers comparing digital providers can see how this distinction has changed for other fintechs in Monzo and Revolut in 2026.
How Much Money Is Protected in Monzo?
For eligible bank deposits, the main FSCS protection limit is currently:
| Situation | Potential FSCS Deposit Protection |
| Individual eligible depositor | Up to £120,000 |
| Two eligible holders of a joint account | Potentially up to £240,000 combined |
| Qualifying temporary high balance | Up to £1.4 million |
| Investment claim | Different rules; generally up to £85,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm |
The important wording is per eligible person, per authorised firm, not per account or per Pot.
Someone with £70,000 in a Monzo current account and £70,000 in eligible Monzo cash savings should therefore not assume £140,000 is fully protected simply because the money appears in different accounts.
The balances have to be considered against the applicable FSCS protection for the authorised institution.
FSCS says eligible joint-account holders will normally each have their own £120,000 deposit-protection entitlement.
What If More Than £120,000 Is Temporarily Held in Monzo?
An important protection often missed in Monzo reviews is the FSCS temporary high balance regime.
Certain balances arising from qualifying life events can receive protection of up to £1.4 million for six months.
Examples can include money arising from the sale of a main home or an inheritance, subject to the FSCS eligibility conditions.
Personal-injury compensation can receive different treatment.
This means somebody who temporarily has £300,000 in an account after selling their home should not automatically assume everything above £120,000 is unprotected. The circumstances behind the balance matter.
What Would Happen If Monzo Failed?
If a UK-authorised bank fails and cannot return eligible deposits, the FSCS can step in.
For ordinary eligible bank deposits, the FSCS says compensation is normally paid automatically and aims to make payments within seven working days of a bank, building society or credit union failing. More complicated cases can take longer.
The £120,000 limit is therefore protection against bank failure.
It should not be confused with fraud reimbursement or card-payment protection.
Those are governed by different mechanisms.
Is Monzo Financially Stable in 2026?
Nobody can guarantee that a bank could never encounter financial difficulties. A more useful approach is to examine the latest published regulatory and financial information.
Monzo’s FY2026 results reported:
| FY2026 Metric | Reported Figure |
| Revenue | £1.7 billion |
| Adjusted profit before tax | £172.6 million |
| Customer deposits | £25.7 billion |
| Total customers | 15.2 million |
| Monthly active customers | 10.4 million |
Monzo reported that FY2026 was its third consecutive profitable year.
Its regulatory Pillar 3 disclosures also provide a more technical view.
At group level, Monzo reported a Common Equity Tier 1 ratio of 33.45% for 2026. Its disclosures also reported liquidity ratios substantially above the regulatory minimums, although these ratios can change from year to year as the balance sheet grows.
These figures do not make failure impossible, nor should they be interpreted as a guarantee of future financial health. They do, however, give a more useful picture than simply judging Monzo by whether it has physical branches.
What About the £21 Million FCA Fine Against Monzo?
This is one of the most important facts a current article about Monzo safety should not leave out.
On 8 July 2025, the FCA announced a £21,091,300 fine against Monzo Bank Limited for inadequacies in its anti-financial-crime systems and controls.
The FCA said the relevant control failings principally related to the period between October 2018 and August 2020. It also found that Monzo repeatedly breached a restriction relating to opening accounts for high-risk customers between August 2020 and June 2022.
Therese Chambers, the FCA’s joint executive director of enforcement and market oversight, said that banks are:
“a vital line of defence in the collective fight against financial crime.”
That regulatory history should not be hidden in an article asking whether Monzo is safe.
However, the fine also needs the correct context.
It concerned weaknesses in customer onboarding, customer risk assessment, transaction monitoring and compliance with a regulatory restriction. It was not an announcement that customers’ deposits had disappeared or that Monzo had lost its UK banking authorisation.
The FCA also said Monzo subsequently established and completed a financial-crime change programme designed to remediate and enhance its framework.
As of September 2026, Monzo remains listed as a PRA-authorised UK bank.
How Does Monzo Protect the App and Your Account?
Monzo uses several security controls rather than relying on one password.
Current measures include biometric authentication, PIN protection, real-time transaction notifications, 3D Secure for relevant online card purchases and additional protection for higher-risk movements of money.
One particularly useful feature is Monzo Call Status.
If somebody phones claiming to be from Monzo, customers can check inside the app whether Monzo is actually speaking to them.
Monzo says it will not unexpectedly call a customer and instruct them to move money into a “safe account”. That is a significant point because bank-impersonation scams frequently rely on creating urgency and persuading victims to transfer their own money.
What Does Monzo’s Security Director Say?
Amy Grieveson, Monzo’s Director of Security Behaviours and Governance, discussed the human side of banking security during Group-IB’s Masked Actors cyber-security programme in November 2025.
She described part of her role as:
“helping people understand how everyday decisions can have a real impact on keeping them and their information safe.”
That is worth highlighting because modern banking security is not purely technical.
A bank can provide biometrics, fraud detection and payment warnings, yet criminals can still use social engineering to persuade the genuine customer to authorise a transaction.
What Happens If Your Phone Is Stolen?
Phone theft creates a slightly different type of banking risk.
A thief may have physical possession of the device and could potentially try to exploit an unlocked phone, saved email account, notifications or weak device security.
Monzo allows customers to secure access using biometrics and provides additional security controls for sensitive transactions.
Monzo also says customers can access account-protection tools from another device to freeze accounts and remotely log out existing devices if their phone is lost or stolen.
Customers should still secure the phone itself with a strong device passcode and protect the email account associated with Monzo.
That email account is particularly important because Monzo uses email as part of its authentication processes.
Will Monzo Refund You If You Are Scammed?

Possibly, depending on the type of payment and circumstances.
This is where many explanations of “bank safety” become misleading.
APP Bank-Transfer Scams
Since 7 October 2024, UK rules have required payment firms to reimburse qualifying victims of authorised push payment fraud in many circumstances.
An APP scam happens when the customer genuinely authorises a bank transfer but does so because a criminal has deceived them.
For eligible Monzo APP fraud claims, Monzo says it will normally:
- reimburse qualifying claims within five business days, although complex cases can take up to 35 business days;
- reimburse up to £85,000 under the mandatory scheme; and
- potentially apply an excess of up to £100, depending on the circumstances.
The £100 excess cannot be applied to certain vulnerable consumers under the regulatory framework.
The key point is that the £85,000 APP scam reimbursement cap and £120,000 FSCS bank-deposit limit are different protections.
The fact that the FSCS deposit limit increased in December 2025 did not automatically raise the APP reimbursement cap.
How Effective Are the New Scam Rules?
The Payment Systems Regulator’s latest dashboard, updated on 30 July 2026, reported that between 7 October 2024 and 31 March 2026, 88% of money lost in reimbursable APP scam cases was returned to victims.
It also reported that 82% of claims were closed within five business days and 98% within 35 business days.
Those are industry-wide figures rather than a Monzo-specific reimbursement rate.
What About Card Fraud and Purchases?
Debit-card payments follow different rules from APP bank transfers.
If a card transaction is unauthorised, the bank should investigate it under the relevant payment-services rules.
For disputes involving purchases, Mastercard’s chargeback process may also be available in qualifying circumstances.
Chargeback is not the same thing as FSCS protection and is not the same as the statutory Section 75 protection associated with qualifying credit-card purchases.
Monzo itself recommends paying by card rather than bank transfer where possible when purchasing products or services, because disputes can be easier to pursue if something goes wrong.
Is Monzo Safe If the App Goes Down?
An app outage does not mean the bank has failed.
Monzo published additional operational-resilience information in August 2026 explaining that cards can often continue working during an app problem and that its “Monzo Stand-in” system is intended to keep certain transfers and ATM withdrawals operating during major incidents.
For FY2026, Monzo reported:
- 99.995% payments-platform availability;
- 99.998% Faster Payments processing availability through its resilience arrangements; and
- 99.996% card-processing availability.
Those statistics are Monzo’s own reported FY2026 figures and should be understood as historical service-performance data, not a guarantee that an outage cannot occur in future.
It is nevertheless sensible for someone using any digital-first bank as their main account to have an alternative way of paying for essentials.
That could be another debit card, a credit card where appropriate, or access to a small balance elsewhere.
Can Monzo Freeze Your Account?
Yes. Like other regulated banks, Monzo can restrict an account or block transactions where fraud, money laundering, compromised credentials or other suspicious activity needs investigation.
This can sometimes be inconvenient for a genuine customer.
The Financial Ombudsman Service confirms more generally that banks and payment providers can freeze accounts or block payments where they suspect fraudulent or illegal activity or are required to do so by a court.
This risk is not unique to Monzo.
If access to one bank account would leave somebody completely unable to buy food, travel or pay an urgent bill, maintaining a backup payment method can provide useful practical resilience.
Is It Safe to Keep Your Salary in Monzo?
From the perspective of banking regulation and eligible deposit protection, there is no requirement to keep a separate traditional high-street bank simply because Monzo operates primarily through an app.
Eligible deposits are covered by the FSCS up to the applicable £120,000 limit, and Monzo is a PRA-authorised bank.
Whether someone wants Monzo as their only current account is a slightly different question.
Someone who values branch access, face-to-face support or a second payment route during technical problems may still prefer to maintain another account.
Someone choosing Monzo as a main account should also understand its ATM limits. UKFinanceBlog’s detailed explanation of the Monzo cash withdrawal limit covers the difference between the daily withdrawal limit and the fee-free allowance.
Is Monzo Safe to Use Abroad?
The underlying UK bank account does not suddenly lose its regulatory status when its debit card is used overseas.
However, travel introduces separate issues including card theft, ATM charges, foreign cash-withdrawal allowances and access to a replacement payment method.
Monzo does not normally add a foreign transaction fee to ordinary debit-card purchases in another currency, although ATM rules are different.
The detailed allowances are covered in UKFinanceBlog’s guide to using Monzo abroad and its overseas charges.
Travellers should still carry a second payment method rather than relying entirely on one card or phone.
Are Monzo Investments as Safe as Monzo Cash?
This requires an important distinction.
Money in a current account or eligible cash deposit is not the same thing as money invested in funds.
The £120,000 FSCS limit applies to eligible bank deposits.
FSCS investment protection generally remains up to £85,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm where the relevant eligibility conditions are satisfied. It does not compensate an investor simply because a fund falls in value.
Monzo uses BlackRock investment products, while Seccl provides investment custody and related infrastructure for its current investment offering.
Anybody considering Monzo Investments should therefore separate two questions:
Is the investment service regulated and are there protections if a regulated firm fails?
and:
Could the investment itself lose money because markets fall?
The answer to the second question is always yes. Investment values can fall as well as rise.
Is Monzo Safe for Business Banking?
Monzo Business operates through the same regulated banking group, and eligible business deposits can also qualify for FSCS protection depending on the legal entity and eligibility rules.
An important detail is that a limited company is a separate legal person. FSCS explains that an eligible limited company can potentially have its own £120,000 entitlement even where its owner separately holds personal deposits with the same institution.
A sole trader generally does not receive a second £120,000 allowance merely because money is labelled as business money.

How Can You Make a Monzo Account Safer?
The most effective approach combines the bank’s controls with sensible customer behaviour:
- enable biometric protection;
- use a strong phone passcode;
- secure the email account connected to Monzo;
- review logged-in devices and connected apps;
- use Monzo’s additional security controls for larger transactions;
- check Monzo Call Status if somebody claiming to be from the bank phones;
- never transfer money to a supposed “safe account”;
- avoid allowing strangers to remotely control a phone or computer;
- review instant transaction notifications;
- freeze the card immediately if it is missing;
- use card payments rather than bank transfers when buying from an unfamiliar seller where appropriate; and
- maintain access to another payment method for emergencies.
One useful rule is particularly simple: a genuine bank employee should not pressure a customer into transferring money to protect it from the bank itself.
So, Is Monzo Safe in 2026?
For UK customers asking whether Monzo is a legitimate, regulated bank where ordinary eligible deposits can be kept, the answer is yes.
Monzo Bank Limited remains authorised by the PRA and regulated by the FCA and PRA. Eligible deposits are protected by the FSCS up to £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm, and qualifying temporary high balances can receive substantially higher short-term protection.
Its latest FY2026 reporting also shows a considerably larger and profitable bank, with £25.7 billion of deposits and £172.6 million of adjusted profit before tax.
But there are important qualifications.
The FCA’s £21.1 million fine for historical financial-crime-control failures is material and should be considered rather than ignored. The FCA also confirms that Monzo subsequently completed a programme intended to remediate and strengthen those controls.
Customers should also remember that no bank can remove the risks created by phishing, impersonation scams, stolen phones, customer-authorised transfers, temporary outages or investment-market losses.
The most accurate conclusion is therefore not that Monzo is “100% safe”. No bank can reasonably make that promise.
Instead, Monzo has the core regulatory, deposit-protection and security structures expected of a major UK bank, while customers still need to understand which protection applies to each type of risk.
Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Eligible Monzo bank deposits are currently protected up to £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm. The limit increased from £85,000 on 1 December 2025.
Is Monzo Regulated by the FCA?
Yes. Monzo Bank Limited is regulated by the FCA and PRA and authorised by the PRA. Its Financial Services Register number is 730427.
Can I Safely Have My Salary Paid Into Monzo?
Monzo is a fully authorised UK bank and eligible deposits receive FSCS protection. Some customers may still prefer a second account as a backup for outages, lost phones or temporary account restrictions.
What Happens if Monzo Goes Bust?
If Monzo failed and could not repay eligible bank deposits, the FSCS could compensate eligible customers up to £120,000 per person, subject to its rules. FSCS says ordinary bank-failure compensation is normally paid within seven working days.
Is £120,000 Protected in Every Monzo Account?
No. The limit is generally per eligible person, per authorised firm, rather than £120,000 for every current account, Pot or savings account.
Is a Monzo Joint Account Protected Up to £240,000?
Where both account holders are individually eligible, each can normally receive up to £120,000 of FSCS deposit protection, potentially providing £240,000 combined protection on joint deposits. Individual circumstances and other balances held with the same authorised firm must also be considered.
Will Monzo Call and Ask Me to Transfer Money to a Safe Account?
No. Monzo specifically warns that it will not tell customers to move money to a “safe account”. Customers can use Monzo Call Status in the app to check whether a caller is genuinely speaking with Monzo.
Does FSCS Protection Cover Scams?
No. FSCS deposit protection primarily protects eligible money if an authorised financial institution fails. APP scams, unauthorised transactions and card disputes are handled under separate rules and processes.
Is Monzo Safer Than Revolut?
Both now operate UK banking businesses with regulatory protections, but their accounts, security features and services are different. The detailed differences are covered in UKFinanceBlog’s Revolut vs Monzo comparison for 2026.
Are Monzo Investments Guaranteed?
No. Investment values can fall. FSCS investment protection is not compensation for ordinary market losses, and the investment compensation limit is different from the £120,000 cash-deposit limit.
Is Monzo Safe to Use as My Only Bank Account?
It can be used as a primary current account, but maintaining another payment method can reduce disruption if a card is lost, a phone is stolen, an account is temporarily reviewed or a banking service experiences an outage.
