03 / Tax bands
Tax is layered.
Not all at one rate.
Only the part of your taxable income inside a band is charged at that band's rate. The standard Personal Allowance is £12,570 and is reduced above £100,000.
*The allowance tapers by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income above £100,000.
04 / How we estimate
Built around official 2026/27 thresholds
The calculator applies PAYE Income Tax bands, standard employee Class 1 National Insurance rates and current student loan thresholds to annual income. It assumes a standard Personal Allowance and no taxable benefits, other income or special NI category.
05 / Common questions
What your payslip may do differently
A salary calculator is most useful when its assumptions are clear.
How accurate is this UK salary calculator?
It is an annualised estimate for a standard employee. Your actual payslip can differ because of your tax code, pay frequency, benefits, expenses, previous pay, NI category or payroll rounding.
Does salary sacrifice reduce tax and National Insurance?
A genuine salary sacrifice normally reduces contractual cash pay before Income Tax and National Insurance are calculated. This tool applies the percentage to base salary, not the bonus. Other pension arrangements work differently.
Why are Scottish Income Tax rates different?
Scotland sets separate Income Tax bands and rates for non-savings, non-dividend income. National Insurance remains UK-wide, so selecting Scotland changes Income Tax only.
Can undergraduate and postgraduate loans be deducted together?
Yes. If both apply, payroll can deduct an undergraduate-plan repayment and a separate Postgraduate Loan repayment. This calculator lets you include both.
Is pension money counted as a tax?
No. It is shown with deductions because it does not reach your bank account today, but it remains pension saving. The take-home figure is cash after the contribution.
