NHS Pension Calculator FAQs
Key points to understand before using an estimate for retirement planning.
How is the NHS 2015 Pension Scheme calculated?
The 2015 Scheme is a career-average revalued earnings scheme. Each year you build pension equal to 1/54 of that year's pensionable earnings. Benefits are then revalued while you remain an active member.
How is a 1995 Section NHS pension calculated?
For a standard officer calculation, the annual pension is normally pensionable pay multiplied by pensionable membership and divided by 80. The 1995 Section also normally provides an automatic retirement lump sum equal to three times the pension.
How is a 2008 Section NHS pension calculated?
For officers, the 2008 Section normally provides 1/60 of reckonable pay for each year of pensionable membership. It does not normally include an automatic lump sum.
What is the normal pension age for the NHS Pension Scheme?
It is normally age 60 in the 1995 Section, 65 in the 2008 Section, and in the 2015 Scheme it is your State Pension age or age 65 if that is later. Some 1995 members with Special Class status can have different rights.
Does this calculator include early retirement reductions?
No. Taking NHS pension benefits before the relevant normal pension age can reduce the amount. The exact reduction depends on the scheme, age and retirement date, so this calculator shows benefits before those adjustments.
What is the McCloud remedy and can it change my estimate?
Some members affected by the public-service pension remedy can choose between legacy and reformed scheme benefits for service in the remedy period. That choice can alter the final benefit, so an official NHS Pension statement should be used for personalised figures.
Does this calculator work for NHS practitioners?
Not accurately. Practitioner benefits use career-average calculations that differ from the standard officer final-salary formulas in the 1995 and 2008 Sections. Practitioners should rely on their NHS Pension statement or an official estimate.
